What is erythema?

Erythema refers specifically to the redness of the skin that occurs due to increased blood flow to the capillaries near the surface of the skin, typically in response to inflammation or irritation. While dryness, itching, and swelling are symptomatic of other skin issues, they do not accurately represent what erythema is.
